John Spencer
| John Spencer was trained in drawing and painting
at Wimbeldon School of Art and in Art Teaching at Reading University.
He taught at secondary and tertiary levels between 1946 and 1990.
A lifelong interest in art history led to the award of a masters
degree (Courtauld Institute) and a doctorate (Manchester University);
This resulted in some diversification in his teaching and to what
some have found a puzzling variety in his painting style. He is
however happy to reflect a variety of styles in his work, is adverse
to the merely fashionable and to wearing blinkers. |
| |
| He finds the decorative and structural aspects
of art inseparable from imaginative and spiritual concerns and is
very interested in the world of myth and symbols. He sees 'style'
as a quite secondary matter. He has drawn and painted throughout
his teaching career and has happily found himself free to concentrate
on oil painting, etching and writing since his retirement in 1991. |
